Data Center

Data Center is a centralized location where a group of computing and networking-related equipment is concentrated for various purposes like collecting, storing, processing, distributing, or allowing access to a large amount of data in a very organized manner. The Internet that we are using is coming from various datacenter so sometimes datacenter is called Engine of the Internet or Brain of the Internet. The datacenter may be of any type private or shared varies from Simple to Complex.

Component of Data Center

There are various components used in the data center. Some of the important components are:

1)Server: Because of the high concentration of servers, sometimes the data center is also called Server Farms.

2)Cooling System: Temperature and Humidity are controlled via air conditioning in DataCenter.

3)Ventilation System: Proper Ventilation system is required to ensure optimal air flow in and out of the data center.

4)Scrutinized Security System: This will prevent unauthorized access to data across centers.

5)Power Distribution and Backup System: Use UPS, Battery banks, Capacitors, etc.

6)Fire Protection: Use Fire Sprinkler System.

7)Racks: Racks support various components such as a server, storage devices, and switches for space consumption and easy management.

Top Priority

Security and Reliability and Availability of data are the top priority of the datacentre.

Emerging Technology in DataCenter

Some of the emerging technology in the data center is described below:

1. Edge DataCenter

It is a data center present between the central data center and the end-user. Some of the aims of Edge DataCenter are:

  • Reduce Latency hence improving performance
  • Decrease Network Congestion
  • Minimize bandwidth used and server resources, finally, save cost
  • Keep the mission-critical system on-premises.
  • Acts as data-aggregation and content-caching between an end-user and datacenter.

Internet user rates are increasing rapidly so when cloud computing only cannot handle those large amounts of traffic. For this, edge data computing is required. When the client requests the resource then the nearest data center will provide the information required. If it does not have then this data center will contact the nearest data center in the chain and provides the required result. The concept is an edge computing concept. Ex. Cloudflare has uses this technology.

2. All-Flash Solution

Replace the HDD storage disk of the server with a more efficient all-flash solution like an SSD.

Some of the advantages of All-Flash Devices are:-

  • Faster than spinning HDD
  • Unlike spinning disks and tape, it doesn't have any movable parts and magnets. So damage while moving the disk from place to place.
  • Its booting time is faster than HDD.
  • Fragmentation of the drive is not necessary to store data.
  • It does not make noise or vibration as it doesn't have a movable part.
  • SSD supports Disk Encryption.
  • Non-volatile and easily rewritable.
  • Access Time is faster than HDD
  • Low failure rate and Low I/O waiting Time

3. Use Converged Technologies

Data Center design can be simplified by using Converged Infrastructure and Hyper-Converged Infrastructure Technology and this will make the business to be more agile.

4. DCIM Tools, Liquid Cooling Technology, Microgrids

Make more investment in making the data center more efficient in the management and operation of the data center.

     a) Use DCIM Tools: DCIM tools are Data Center infrastructure management (DCIM) tools. The biggest reason for making an investment in buying DCIM tools is for disaster prevention.DCIM tools help to monitor, manage and control data center utilization and energy consumption of all IT-related equipment. It provides a wide range of configuration, reporting and management capabilities. DCIM helps in improving data center capacity planning, managing, and monitoring energy costs. Actually, DCIM software collects data from IT and facilities and consolidates those data into relevant information and reports it in real-time to enable efficient management, optimization, and future planning of data center resources such as capacity, power, cooling, space, and assets.

    b) Use Liquid Cooling Technology: Use a liquid cooler instead of a traditional air cooler in the CPU. Using a liquid cooler way to cool the CPU because water heat transfer is much faster than air. Also, liquid cooling makes server CPU run quieter because we won't have fans constantly running at a high RPM

c)Use Microgrids:  Microgrids are small-scale power grids. The practice of using microgrids is known for distributed, dispersed, and decentralized energy production. Datacenter requires large amounts of power to operate so using microgrid technology helps to cut off costs and improve efficiency, reliability, etc.

5. Collocation Data Center

The collocation data center is a type of data center where retail customers can lease equipment, space, and bandwidth. Collocation Data Center has all the facilities like server space, power, backup system, cooling system, Intrusion Detection System, physical security for the server, and storage and provides that at minimum low cost to the customer.

Suppose you are a private organization and if you want to set up own datacenter then it will be too costly and maintaining all power backup, cooling systems and many more are very tedious work so these private organization can set up their own/rent server in the colocation data center and other all power backup, cooling system, electricity, internet bandwidth, etc will be maintained by the collocation data center and you should not have to worry much about their data, storage, uptime and downtime, bandwidth, electricity, security, etc.

You as a private organization will have to pay money for keeping their material and this money is found to be cheaper and less tedious as compared to establishing your own server and handling ownself. So, we can say the aim of the colocation data center is "Datacenter for all".

6. AI and Machine Learning in Data Center

AI helps in automating the things in the data center. It helps in Workload Management, and Power Management by monitoring server performance, finding network congestions, optimizing heating, finding anomalies and potential defects in the system, finding loopholes in the system. and finally reducing costs.

7. 5G Network

5G provides faster data speeds transmission with low latency which helps to boost edge computing systems. So, the data center has to upgrade there hardware and software to support 5G technology.

8. Security

Securing the data and infrastructure of the data centre is one of the great challenges. In a highly secured data centre, there will be less chance for data breaches, threats, and cyber attacks.

The initial line of defence against external attacks and malicious activities, such as DDOS attacks and scanning activity, must be done at Edge Data Center or Internet Edge. There should be no unauthorized traffic allowed to pass through the Edge Data Center.

9. Load Management

There will be a high load on the servers in the data centre, so servers must be provisioned to handle peak load and guarantee service availability, which is very expensive. A proper load balancing system should be introduced for distributing proper loads to the server.

Conclusion:

Actually upgrading to the latest technology for Data Center is challenging and many data center companies are giving life to it.
