In this article, I will explain to you what is USB Type C and the Benefits of USB Type C in detail. Without delay let's start:

USB (Universal Serial Bus) is an interface that enables the communication between wide ranges of devices from computing and charging applications. There are different types of USB connectors. Some of them are USB Type A, USB Type B, USB Type C. Among them, USB Type C is more popular in today's devices.

USB Type C

USB-C ( or USB TypeC) is a 24 pin USB connector that is the successor to USB Type B and USB Type-A connectors. It was first released in August 2014 by USB-IF( USB Implementer Forum). It has a bright future and will replace all previously used USB cables.

It is heavily used in various applications like

  • Desktop Pc /Server
  • Smartphone
  • Tablets
  • Mobile
  • TV
  • Monitor
  • PowerBank
  • Mobile
  • Docking Station
  • Mobile HDD
  • Wall Output
  • Printers
  • Camera
  • Scanners
  • A/V switches etc...

There are lots of other devices still using USB Type B and USB Type C but it's 100% sure that USB Type C take over all devices in the future.

Benefits of USB Type C

USB Type C has many advantages over USB Type-A and USB Type and they are as follows :

1 Reversible

One of the most significant improvements in USB Type C is USB Plug is reversible. You will not find any USB cable with USB Type-A only on both ends, or USB Type B only on both ends. But there is a USB Type C cable that has a type USB Type C connector on both ends so you do not have to look at the USB Type C cable for connection. This helps USB Type C to plug into the devices very faster and conveniently than previous USB Connector designs.

  • USB Type-A and USB Type C connector

2 Symmetrical

USB Type C is symmetrical with round edges connector and it can be plugged in either way ie. you can upside down the USB Type C connector and connects to the USB Type C port. This enables faster connection to the devices than previous USB Type-A and USB Type B ports.

3 Speed

USB Type C is developed with USB 3.1 standard so its starting speed is from 5 Gbps and goes up to 40 Gbps with Thunderbolt3 on USB-C cables.

But note one thing that USB Type C does not determine the speed of the USB.USB standard like USB 2.0, USB 3.0, USB 3.1 determines speed. But USB Type C connector is mostly found in the devices that support high data transfer rates generally with USB 3.1 standard and USB 3.0 standard.

USB Type C is used for maximum performance connection with the speed of 10 Gbps but to achieve that connecting devices must provide it.

4  Powerful

USB Type C connectors can output around to 100 watts of power at 20 V and 5A  which is enough to power your devices as it was intentionally developed for drive data and power transfer. This amount is much higher than USB Type-A and USB Type B. The power of USB Type C can charge your laptop and power bank. If mobile has a USB Type C port then your mobile gets charge very fast because of high power delivery from the type C port.

FYI: OnePlus is the first mobile company to adopt a USB Type C port in smartphones.

In USB Type C, the flow of power is bidirectional whereas in the previous version it is one direction only and is too smaller than USB Type C.

5  Durable

It is said that the lifetime of USB type C is greater than USB  Type-A and B.USB Type A is designed in such a way that it can handle at least 1500 times of insertion and removal.USB Type C is designed to handle at 10000 times of insertion and removal.

Also in USB Type B and USB Type-A, leaf-spring is located into the devices(laptop/monitor/tablet) jack and if you connect and disconnect the USB cable into the port then stress happens more USB Type port of expensive devices. So, the USB port will get into the problem but in USB Type C, the leaf-spring is located in the USB cable and more stress is bear by the USB cable instead of the USB port in the devices. So, the less expensive cable will get into a problem not the expensive component like laptops and smartphones.

Size

USB Type C side with smaller in height and width than USB Type-A and USB Type B connector.

  • Height and Width of USB Type C Standard is 8.25 mm * 2.4 mm.
  • Height and Width of USB TYpe A Standard is 12mm * 4.5mm
  • Height and Width of USB TYpe B Standard is 8.45mm * 7.26mm (source)

USB Type C helps in making USB ports cleaner in laptops and smartphones.USB Type C is slim enough for smartphones.

7  EMI and RFI

Improved EMI (Electromagnetic interference) and RFI(radio frequency interference) mitigation features are present in the USB Type C standard. It has proper protection against EMI and RFI.

So there is less chance of electrical failure in USB type c components also less electrical disturbance within the radio frequency spectrum

8  Support

Widely supported by large tech laptops and smartphone manufacturers like Apple, Dell, Samsung, Asus, Hp, and many more, etc.

As USB Type C is developed by  USB Implementer Forum. In this group, there are over 700 companies including  Dell, Samsung, Asus, Hp, Microsoft, etc.

Example: Scandisk also has a 32 GB flash drive with USB Type C, Nokia N1 tablet also has a Type C connector, In its upcoming generation of Thunderbolt, Intel has included a USB C port.

9  Compatibility

USB Type C is initially designed for a universal solution. In an alternate mode, USB Type C can be used to implement third-party interfaces. With the help of an adapter, USB Type C has the ability to use alt. modes for compatibility with connectors like HDMI, Display Port, MHL even D-Sub (VGA).USB Type C support for DisplayPort Alternate Mode. To USB-C and HDMI monitors, USB-C cables can offer Ultra-HD 4K video resolution.

10 Manufacturer Independent Port

USB-C charger is common among modern phones, tablets, and even laptops (almost all Apple's Laptops). So, we do not have to rely on the manufacturer charger as the only source of the safe charger. We can use other manufacturer chargers as well. So, if you have two laptops of different brands then you can charge them with the same cable.

Conclusion:

Because of all the above advantages, USB Type C can be the future of USB Connector.
